During the month of February in 2022, two popular New York Times series, “Modern Love” and “Black History, Continued” came together to present a selection of responses to the question “What is Black love today?” The eight published responses “illuminate how Black people live, and love, in this moment.” This compelling illustration by Hannah Buckman accompanied Veronica Chambers’ introduction to the series. Chambers writes, “Every Black love story — like every love story — is a journey into uncharted territory, making us explorers and lovers at the same time.”
Hannah Buckman is an artist and illustrator based in London. She graduated from The Royal Drawing School in 2020 and maintains a drawing practice alongside freelance illustration commissions. She has created artwork for The New York Times, Google, Harper’s Magazine, gal-dem and more.
